Hi! My name is Sophie. Welcome to my blog, The Linnet Kitchen.
I’m 25 years old, originally from a coastal town, currently living in Melbourne. When not teaching or enjoying the city, I spend the majority of my time in the kitchen.
From a young age, I would often find myself in the kitchen with my parents. I have particularly fond memories choosing recipes from a well-loved copy of Stephanie Alexander’s A Cook’s Companion, which is still one of my most frequently used cookbooks today! This introduction to the creation of food, soon led to me independently preparing meals and sweets for my family. By the time I was twelve, it was evident that the kitchen was my happy place and that I had a passion for food.
This love of food has definitely grown through a number of experiences, including time I have spent overseas. Visiting a wide range of countries across both Asia and Europe, I’ve realised that there is an endless amount of good food across the world. I’ve been lucky enough to do many trips abroad where I’ve had the opportunity to stay with locals. As a result, I was able to lend a hand in the kitchen preparing and tasting various traditional cuisines. It was this, that made me realise just how unique food can be to a place and its people. Something that plays such a huge role in a country and its culture is definitely worth celebrating.
My move to Melbourne, has also had a large influence on my love for food. Having a long list of top-quality restaurants at my door step, I have learnt to truly appreciate good quality food. Additionally, living in a city that has such a high focus on modern cuisine, has led me to become more experimental with my own cooking.
After a crazy end to 2016, involving 3 days in intensive care and an acute diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes, I discovered that life is a lot more unpredictable than I had previously assumed. This near death experience, among other things made me realise that there is no time like the present and that life is too short to not make the most of the opportunities at hand. And so, here I am, after a year or so of contemplation, finally blogging!
Here you will find my recipes, as well as the occasional post about life and travels. I hope you enjoy exploring this space; feel free to leave me a comment or visit my contact page to share your thoughts and suggestions!
